Saturday 6th September 2008 1.15 in the morning and a night never to be forgotton by us or our guests who had arrived on the Friday as a 60th birthday celebration.
It rained and it rained- darn weather. We went to bed at midnight and were awoken at 1.15 by our son Adam who couldnt get home by either of 3 roads leading here- all were awash many up to car bonnet depth. Just as Chris had got dressed having decided to fetch him in the land rover , a knock on the door and our vistors had paddled over the yard to tell us they were flooded. A quick glance over to the Bothy confirmed this as a river was pouring out of the front door- hard to take in as we are on the top of a hill.
I dashed over to the cottage and together with our guests we started rescueing items on ground level whilst Chris ran to fetch the digger to dig up drains to release the pressure.
What a night, we stopped the flow, bucketed out, swept out and finally used the good old aquavac. By morning it was almost impossible to tell that a river had run through the property. We are now looking as good as new again- though we have some structural work to carry out inbetween our guests visits- this will affect no one so business can carry on as usual- we were lucky compared to some in that we were able to minimise damage by acting very quickly.
Our thanks to Mr and Mrs Holden who were our guests on the night and who in true Dunkirk spirit, mucked in with the salvage and bunked down on the living room floor for what was left of the night. A birthday never to be forgotton.
